How Do You Correctly Size Your Bathroom Fan For Proper Exhaust?
As already mentioned earlier on the page if you have a shower or bath in your bathroom with your fan on and the mirror still fogs up you have one of two problems. Your exhaust fan isn’t properly sized for your space or it could be worn out and in need of replacement.
Bathroom exhaust fans are rated by CFM (cubic feet per minute). This is the measurement of the air they can move. Your bathroom exhaust fan should be sized large enough so that it can replace replace the air in your bathroom at least eight times an hour.
Let’s say you have a bathroom with an 8 foot ceiling and it’s 8 feet wide by 12 feet long (8′ x 8′ x 12′). You would then multiply the width x length x height of the room. This gives us a total of 768 cubic feet. We then divide that number by 60 (which is how many minutes are in an hour) and we then multiply by 8 which is our target for total air exchange in an hour.
So that would look like this.
8′ x 8′ x 12′ = 768 Cubic Feet. Divided by 60 = 12.8. Then we multiply that by 8 which equals 102.4 CFM. The bare minimum CFM of your bathroom exhaust fan in this case would be 102.4 CFM. If you’re the type of person that likes to take long hot showers then it’s a good idea to size your bathroom exhaust fan a little bit larger than you actually need.
To save on your electrical bills we can even install a timer switch for your bathroom exhaust fan so it will run for a set period of time while you shower and a few minutes after to remove the excess humidity and then it shuts itself off so you don’t forget and leave it running all day.
Installing Your Bathroom Exhaust Fan Properly
It’s pretty common for bathroom exhaust fans to be installed incorrectly and sometimes even unsafely. One of the most common issues we run into is that the bathroom fan is usually undersized or under-performing, which leads to excess humidity, which can then lead to mold and mildew.
Another common issue we run into is usually due to shoddy installation practices with the actual venting of the fan. This needs to be sealed tightly so that humid air cannot be exhausted into your attic space or in between floor joists. This excess humidity can also lead to mold and mildew problems and even rotten roof decking and these are problems you just don’t want to have.

Questions About Bathroom Exhaust Fans?
Why is it important to have an exhaust fan in the bathroom?
Bathroom exhaust fans are crucial for removing excess moisture and unpleasant odors, improving air quality, and preventing the growth of mold and mildew. They also help to clear mirror fogging and can prolong the lifespan of fixtures and paint by reducing humidity levels.
Does a bathroom exhaust fan need to vent outside?
Yes, for safety and efficiency, bathroom exhaust fans should vent to the outdoors, not into an attic or crawlspace. Venting moisture-laden air into these spaces can lead to structural damage and mold growth.
Can an exhaust fan have a light or heater?
Yes, many bathroom exhaust fans come with built-in lights or heaters, or both. A fan with a light can serve dual purposes, while a fan with a heater can provide additional warmth, making your bathroom more comfortable in colder weather.
Can a bathroom exhaust fan be on the same circuit as the lights?
It's generally acceptable for a bathroom fan and light to share a circuit in smaller bathrooms. However, if you have a larger bathroom or a fan with a heater, it may require its own dedicated circuit. Always consult with a professional electrician to ensure your setup complies with local codes.
What should I do if my bathroom exhaust fan stops working?
If your bathroom fan stops working, it could be due to a number of issues such as a tripped circuit breaker, a faulty motor, or a problem with the wiring. It's important to have a professional electrician diagnose and fix the issue to ensure the fan operates safely and effectively.
How often should a bathroom exhaust fan be replaced?
On average, a bathroom exhaust fan should last about 10 years with proper maintenance. If it becomes noisy, less effective, or stops working, it may need to be repaired or replaced.
Can I use a dimmer switch with my bathroom exhaust fan?
While it's common to use a dimmer switch with the light function on a bathroom fan, it's not recommended to use a dimmer for the fan motor itself as it can cause the motor to overheat and fail. If you want to control the speed of your fan then a variable speed fan with a proper controller is a better option.
